Do We Have Free Will? God’s Sovereignty Vs. Our Choice

If God is completely sovereign over all of his creation, can human beings be free to make real choices? Or, does God sovereignly determine our choices too, in which case how can we be held responsible for those choices?

This age-old question has challenged theologians and philosophers for centuries. Even the Apostle Paul wrestled with it in Romans 9 as he reflected on God’s sovereign choice to bless Israel against Israel’s apparent rejection of Jesus, their Messiah. If God is totally sovereign, how can we make real choices? But if we can make real choices, then how can God be truly sovereign?
